US College of Veterinary Science: Veterinary admissions requirements.

There are 28 veterinary Schools which meet the AVMA accreditation standards and colleges in the United States. That’s not even one per state. Each veterinary institute has thousands of applicants for veterinary admissions each year, which makes competition high. The best you can do is to educate yourself on the prequisites required for veterinary school acceptance.

Each school varies somewhat, some are purely academic, whereas other veterinary universities take other achievements into consideration as well as grades. Grades are important as a veterinary education is hard work, not for the faint hearted.

You should check out the veterinary college admission requirements for the school you are intending to apply to, to be sure you meet the desired standards.

These days a lot of applicants have bachelors degrees, however this is often not a requirement, but undergraduate credit hours are needed. Most students accepted onto a veterinary course have completed an undergraduate program, and those without a bachelors degree may find themselves having difficulty getting offered a position.

The prospective applicant for veterinary admissions must usually need to have taken the GRE exam within 5 calendar years of application, with a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, earned at accredited post secondary institutions. This depends upon which veterinary university you are applying, some require the MCAT,( medical college admission test, others the VCAT (veterinary college admission test).
