Student Work Abroad
Get student work Abroad! Being passionate about becoming a veterinarian, means I’m constantly looking for great opportunities to learn and gain as much practical experience as I can.
But lets face it, I’m a poor vet student, struggling to make ends meet, eating pasta for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so I need to earn some money to keep me afloat during my summer vacation. Here’s how I combine both my work experience and earn some much needed money in a work study abroad program.
CCUSA
During my summer vacations I have spent my time on student work abroad as a veterinary technician in the US trying to improve my practical skills and I also get to see a lot of interesting cases. At the same time I am fulfilling my quota for compulsory work experience/seeing practice.
CCUSA are a Visa sponsorship company. If ever you have tried to get a visa to work in America, you may have hit a fair few stumbling blocks, this includes needing a sponsor to apply for your visa for you. But no need to worry, CCUSA do it all for you, for a reasonable price. Student work abroad becomes simpler!
All you have to do is be a student in full time education and under the age of 30. Everything is taken care of for you to work abroad, and anything you need to do yourself is planned out in an easy to read guidebook, they even organize a welcoming committee at your destination! I highly recommend them if you are planning to work abroad.
This year is my second year working abroad going through CCUSA for my visa, and not only is it easy, they are also very very helpful, answering any questions I may need, I can even pop into their office on my route home from uni to ask a question or fill in a form anytime.
Costs
CCUSA (current 2008): €375 –independent program. (find own job-cheaper option).
Flight costs: Approx ₤400-600. (look for the deals- I like Asda.com) –depends on where you are flying to. This is based on West coast of America.
CCUSA is not limited to the USA, other countries include: Croatia, Russia, UK, China, Mexico, South Africa, Australia and more!
Find a veterinary job
CCUSA have a job database you can search for yourself, but it is mainly typical summer vacation work abroa in tourist parks, like waitressing, summer camps, you get the idea. So I decide where I would like to go and then google for veterinary clinics in that area. Once I have a reasonable list, (not everyone will reply) I write, email, fax and telephone them all explaining I am a veterinary student and looking for summer work. I also explain that I have my visa organized, because this is a big deal for future employers, many do not like to have the hassle of applying for a visa for a summer employee. All your employer will have to do is sign a form to say you are working there.
I send a cover letter and my CV/resume. The cover letter includes: Visa information, states whether I have accommodation arranged or would need a place to stay if there is accommodation available, dates available, my current veterinary school, where I am from (only really needed if you are a foreign vet student, for example I am English but study in Slovakia), which year of study, a brief outline of relevant past experience, and then add some of your own personality. I like to show that I am dedicated and have passion for my future goal of becoming a veterinarian. Maybe you would like to express why you want to work at that particular veterinary clinic- perhaps you would like to gain more experience in small animal medicine, or you are planning on specializing in Horses etc.
So, good luck, and don’t give up! Be persistent!
Perseverence and determination alone are omnipotent!
